WordPress is a tradeoff. But a good one.
WordPress was originally created as a blogging platform for civilians (i.e., people who don’t know anything about HTML). The product has evolved to become much more than just blogging software — it has matured into a preeminent Content Management System (CMS) that can be used to design and build robust Web sites (even Web sites that have no blogs).
What has not changed in the course of WordPress’ evolution is its accessibility to civilians. That is, you still don’t need to know anything about HTML to build a WordPress blog or WordPress Web site.
That said, there’s a darn good chance you’re going to want to include something on your Web site that native WordPress does not do so well.
Tables
A basic tabular display of information is probably the best example of an extremely common Web-site feature that native WordPress doesn’t do so well.
Luckily, there are plugins for that! We will install a plugin that facilitates displaying information in tables (and we’ll train you in how to use it).
Yes, you could create a table in your Word processor and then copy/paste it into the WordPress editing box. But you’re likely to get lots of unwanted under-the-hood HTML code that will be difficult to maintain and/or style the way you want it.
So before you start your copying/pasting, let’s do a Web conference in which I can show you how to use the table-maker plugin.
