The Requirement
After my hard drive crashed in November of 2011, I wasn't able to restore my GoldMine CRM system.
I had used many such systems over the years — ACT!, Maximizer, SideKick, and others — and I needed a solution fast.
The Solution
I chose to see this tragedy as an opportunity to do what I'd flirted with for a long time: creating my own CRM system in PHP and MySQL.
Fortunately, I was able to use some GoldMine utilities to extract its database tables and import them into MySQL.
With GoldMine, I was actually only using a fraction of the software's capabilities. And some features I wanted/needed weren't available. The great advantage of this custom system is that it offers exactly what I need — no more and no less. And it's eminently extensible. Rarely does a week go that I don't add a little more functionality or tweak the look and feel.
Another advantage is that it helps me keep up my PHP/MySQL chops.
I work on retainer for most projects. Accurate timekeeping is essential. It is not unusual for a client to call or email me asking how much time he or she has left in his or her retainer bank. I can almost always give an answer within 15-30 seconds.
